Install Steam OS - Beta on your System

For those who do not know what SteamOS is, let me explain that for you: SteamOS is a Debian Linux based OS (Operating System) in development by Valve Corporation. This OS is aimed to be the primary OS for all steam machine game consoles.

Valve finally released SteamOS beta sometime back. But, only 300 people got SteamOS along with hardware to test it out. What about the rest of us? Well, we’ve figured out a way to catch a glimpse of SteamOS – install it on our desktops!

Before we even begin teaching you how to install SteamOS, there are few things you need to be aware of:

  1. This will completely wipe your machine. Due to the way in which Valve has distributed the SteamOS installation image, it is not possible to partition your hard drive or dual boot it along with your existing OS. This image is created like a recovery image and if you try to install it on a hard drive, all your data would be wiped clean. Best way is to play around with this on a virtual machine or a spare system which is never used.
  2. It may wipe out your secondary hard drives too. The basic method of installing SteamOS is not optimized for installation on systems with multiple hard drives. It is possible to loose data on other drives if your boot tables are not setup properly. We suggest you remove all drives before installing SteamOS Beta.
  3. NVIDIA Graphics Card is mandatory for SteamOS installation. At the moment, only NVIDIA users can install SteamOS Beta. AMD users will get support soon.

Pre-Requisites:

Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
Memory (RAM): 4GB or more
HDD (Hard Drive): 500GB or more
USB Drive: 4GB or larger
Video Card (GFX Card): NVIDIA GFX Card
Others: UEFI Boot Support, USB Port for Installation, Motherboard with UEFI Support and SteamOS Installer.

Now, let us start installing SteamOS Beta on our Desktop. The easiest way to install SteamOS beta on your desktop is to install the recovery image. Just backup your data since everything will be wiped out.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Format your USB Drive to FAT32 format and then name it ‘SYSRESTORE’.
  2. Unzip the SYSRESTORE.zip file and place its contents in the USB Drive.
  3. Boot your system from the USB Disk.
  4. Select UEFI entry from the boot menu while it boots.
  5. Finally select ‘Restore Entire Disk’.

By doing this your system will have a ready to use SteamOS Beta on it. You can now dual boot a Windows OS to this installation if required.
