More from King’s Landing: Details of the Marketplace

One of my favorite things about Game of Thrones is how easy it is to immerse oneself in the world of Westeros. The production works hard to create a fully realized fantasy kingdom, you believe you might be able to take a flight to. (Just as soon as Dany gets Dragon Airlines off the ground, and the international hubs like LAX work out the logistics of landing real live Dragons.)

Said details have been evident from the dedicated fan pictures we’ve been sent of the last couple of days. Most of these are courtesy of the website SeekNewTravel, who is documenting his visit to the King’s Landing sets of Croatia.

Part of the problem is that those coming to film get turned away if they don’t have a badge. When it comes to actors, this is as close as the average person can get most days.

But since everything is so detailed, stuff has to be set u ahead of time, so the enterprising Westerosi tourist can usually find things to take pictures of that aren’t actually being used for filming.

These photos, for instance, are all from the Market set up we showed you in the last post–before the extras arrived and started mucking about.

The variety of detail here is amazing. These lace up pieces will probably never be worn as costumes, they were all just made for this stall.

There are tons of food shots.

That’s important, because one of the plot points for next season is that <spoiler>under Cersei’s rule the local populace is starving to death.</spoiler>

So having these beautiful shots of food–<spoilers>food which will be destroyed by the Sparrows</spoilers>–helps tell that story.

More nice touches–old doors and set dressing to cover the modernity of Dubrovnik’s Old City. Sometimes Old Cities just aren’t quite old enough.
